Portrait: Erin – Montgomery, Alabama

The last time I photographed Erin, she was about five years old.  Fast forward a few years, and her grandmother called me with an idea.  She had dug up an old baseball uniform that had once been worn by Erin’s grandfather, and thought it would be a fun surprise to give him pictures of his granddaughter wearing it.  She even found his old mitt and ball, and since she didn’t find a hat, she bought one in the right color and had it embroidered in a font similar to the one used on the jersey (genius!).

My thinking was it wouldn’t make sense for us to shoot at a modern baseball field since the uniform was vintage, I was picturing something with more woods and dirt – a place where kids might have tossed a ball around or started a pickup game back in the day.  We found an empty lot in a neighborhood that happened to have a fallen log on it, and decided that was as good a spot as any since it provided the perfect place for Erin to sit.  Since she would be wearing the same outfit for the whole shoot, we decided to give it some variety by changing up her hair – we did a few shots the way she had it when I arrived (with her ponytail sticking out of the back of the hat), then some with it all down, then I braided it down one side and mussed it up for a rough-and-tumble tomboy look.  We must have done a good job, because rumor has it, granddaddy may have shed a tear or two when he opened up the album.tomboy in a baseball uniformtomboy smiling with a baseball batgirl in a baseball outfitgirl in a vintage baseball uniform in alabamatomboy in a vintage baseball uniform

Wedding: Amy & Josh – The Oaks Plantation – Pike Road, Alabama

If you have Cracker Jack in retro boxes and blue Kate Spade shoes at your wedding, chances are good that you’re my kind of people. 🙂wedding ring shot on retro cracker jack boxblue kate spade wedding shoes

With 5 bridesmaids, 5 groomsmen, 3 flower girls, 3 ring bearers, a maid of honor, a best man, 2 ushers, and 6 house party girls in the bridal party, The Oaks Plantation was abuzz with activity as Amy donned her David’s Bridal gown. Flowers by Melissa Kendall were on standby to complete the look:bride getting ready at the oaks plantationbouquet by melissa kendall at the oaks plantationbridal portraits at a pike road alabama weddinggroom getting ready at the oaks plantation

When I went to gather the guys for pictures, one of the groomsmen had just discovered his pants were way too big. Now it’s not at all unusual for a groomsman to end up with a rented piece of clothing that’s a size too big or small, but these pants weren’t just a little big. More like, these-will-fall-down-to-my-ankles-as-soon-as-I-take-a-step too big. Luckily, the guys were wearing vests, so if we could somehow attach his pants to his shirt, the vest would help cover it. I’ve done some unusual things at weddings, but that was the first time I safety pinned a guy’s pants to his shirt (by the way, it worked!):groomsman with too big pants pinned to his shirtgroom and groomsmen at oaks plantation wedding

Most weddings at The Oaks Plantation take place behind the house, but Amy and Josh decided to mix it up have it in front, under the huge oak trees that grow there. Chandeliers hung from the branches (thanks to Amy’s dad and Josh), and just prior to the start of the processional, two of Amy’s sisters provided the musical notes:program fans and chandeliers at a summer pike road weddingsisters of the bride playing musicfunny shot of ringbearer coming down the aisle in pike roadbride and groom exchange looks during the ceremony at the oaks plantationmoss hanging from trees at an oaks plantation weddingoutdoor ceremony in front of the oaks plantationbride and groom with barbed wire on a farm in pike roadbride and groom after their oaks plantation ceremonybride and groom laughing after their pike road wedding

The reception featured cornhole boards for the guests to play a few games, as well as catering by Incredible Edibles. The bride’s cake (also by Incredible Edibles) was a classically simple monogrammed style, while the groom’s cake (made by a friend) was a replica of the tugboat Josh works on. Guests could put together their own favors at the candy table, full of old school favorites such as Sugar Daddy, Dubble Bubble, and Cow Tales, all in galvanized buckets:kids playing at an oaks plantation wedding receptionguests playing cornhole at a pike road weddingmonogrammed wedding cake at the oaks plantationtugboat grooms cake at the oaks plantationcatering by incredible edibles at the oaks plantationcandy table favors at the oaks plantation wedding reception

As the sun went down, the Blue Denim Band announced the newlyweds, and Amy (with a new ‘do) and Josh hit the floor for their first dance: bride and grooms first dance at the oaks plantationbride dancing at the oaks plantation weddingblue denim band at the oaks plantation weddingbride and groom dancing at their pike road wedding reception

Then it happened – the bride and her family took over for the band…and when I say “took over” I don’t mean they picked up their instruments and pretended to play. They brought the house down with “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Rocky Top” like a bad*ss Southern version of The Partridge Family. Amy took the keys, Dad was on guitar, and Amy’s three sisters each covered drums, bass, and fiddle (and if you look closely, you’ll see that Amy’s sister Holli rocked that bass while VERY pregnant). I’ve shot weddings where maybe one or two members of the bridal party played an instrument or sang sometime during the wedding, but never an entire family – it was definitely one of the coolest things I’ve witnessed!bride's family takes over for the band at the wedding receptionbride and her sister playing keyboards and drumsduring the reception

Amy’s dad (who’s the cameraman for the Woodhaven Pure Turkey TV show, for all you hunters out there) filmed the bride and groom’s grand exit. They made their way through a row of crimson and white Alabama shakers before the groomsmen ceremoniously dumped an entire bag of birdseed on Josh’s head:bride and groom grand exit from the oaks plantation

Amy & Josh: it was totally worth getting bitten by bugs the size of jetliners at your reception, thanks for letting me be part of a fun day of firsts! And if I ever need a band or a tugboat, I know who to call. 🙂

Wedding: Stephanie & Craig – Bush Memorial Baptist Church & Troy University Stadium Club – Troy, Alabama

On a warm sunny day in Troy at Bush Memorial Baptist Church, Craig put on his spiffiest duds – including a Victorinox watch (his wedding gift from Stephanie):wedding rings at troy alabama ceremonygroom getting ready for troy alabama weddingbadgley mischka shoes at a troy alabama weddingbride getting into coco anais gown at a troy alabama wedding

After a hectic morning, Stephanie donned her Coco Anais gown, and read a letter from her husband-to-be. In it he mentioned how someone once told him that life is like a coin, you only get to spend it once – and if he had a thousand coins, he would spend them all on her (excuse me while I swoon for a minute):bride crying reading a letter from the groom in alabamabride at bush memorial baptist church weddingbride at bush memorial in troy alabama

The bride’s cake featured a sparkly brooch, while the groom’s cake included a compass – a little nautical nod to the marine biologist groom:brides cake with brooch at a troy university weddingnautical compass grooms cake at troy university wedding

The newlyweds entertained their guests by singing with the Waterfall band, made even more fun with the addition of a signature cocktail in a shade of lavender to match the bridesmaids’ dresses:bride and groom sing with waterfall bandsignature cocktail at a troy university weddingbride and groom sparkler exit from troy university weddingStephanie & Craig – thank you for letting me be a part of your day! After the story Stephanie told me about using the credit card for the first time, you will always be Mr. & Mrs. “Schimma” to me! 🙂
