Destination Wedding: Alison & Bob – Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort – The Big Island of Hawaii

I’m grateful for all my brides, but it’s always a little extra special when you get to shoot a friend’s wedding. I’ve known Alison for several years now, and couldn’t have been more excited for her when she got engaged. This one was in the works for quite some time – it only took Bob 9 years to pop the question. 🙂 She had mentioned in the past that if they were to get married, it would be in Hawaii, so I was just hoping that I’d be able to make the trip. I was honestly taken aback when she asked me to shoot it.

See, Alison and I became friends when we met at a conference – yeah, she also happens to be a professional photographer (no pressure there, right???). She’s one of the funniest people I know too, so of course, she’s a popular lady and has a ton of friends in the photography world. In other words, she had quite the pool to choose from – I had my guesses who she might pick, and none of those guesses was me. Needless to say, I was surprised to be asked, but honored to do it. I just told myself it had to be because of my mad ninja photography skills and dazzling personality, and not because her first 5 choices were already booked. 😉

I got to The Big Island a couple of days early, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. When the wedding day at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort rolled around, things started off a little….well…A LOT…windy. Like “the-hotel-got-a-wind-advisory-from-the-national-weather-service-and-you-might-need-to-move-your-ceremony-location” kind of windy. We hoped it might die down in time for the ceremony, so in the meantime, we just went about our business. The perfectly tropical bouquet from Passion Flowers by Nalani was decorated with Alison’s grandfather’s union pin:a hawaii destination wedding at the waikoloa beach marriott resort on the big islandThe picture on the bed is of Alison’s grandparents on their wedding day. 🙂a hawaii destination wedding at the waikoloa beach marriott resort on the big islanda hawaii destination wedding at the waikoloa beach marriott resort on the big islanda hawaii destination wedding at the waikoloa beach marriott resort on the big islanda hawaii destination wedding at the waikoloa beach marriott on the big islanda hawaii destination wedding at the waikoloa beach marriott resort on the big islanda hawaii destination wedding at the waikoloa beach marriott resort on the big islandIf you know Alison, you know this is totally normal:a hawaii destination wedding at the waikoloa beach marriott resort on the big islandTo give you an idea of just how windy it was, check out how wrecked my hair is (thanks Rachael Silvers for the pic!). Snapshots: The Big Island of Hawaii

I hadn’t been to Hawaii since I was 18 years old, so when I was hired to shoot not one, but TWO weddings in Hawaii this year, I couldn’t help but be excited about having a job that clearly doesn’t suck. 🙂 Two different islands, neither of which I had visited (I had only been to Oahu). The first wedding was on The Big Island, and it turned out to be one of my favorite destinations ever (and if you know me, you know I like to travel, so that’s saying a lot). Where else can you find beaches that go from white…a destination wedding photographer shoots the big island of hawaii…to black…a destination wedding photographer shoots the big island of hawaiia destination wedding photographer shoots the big island of hawaii…to gold?a destination wedding photographer shoots the big island of hawaiiIt’s also the home of the Ironman World Championships, so there were triathletes in training everywhere (you won’t hear me complaining about that view). While I was there, I ran 10 miles of the marathon portion of the course…a destination wedding photographer shoots the big island of hawaii…and took a stand-up paddleboard out to the buoy marking the turn on the swim course:a destination wedding photographer shoots the big island of hawaiiYou can hop on a boat to whale watch and swim with the friendly “honu” (green sea turtles)…a destination wedding photographer shoots the big island of hawaiia destination wedding photographer shoots the big island of hawaiia destination wedding photographer shoots the big island of hawaii…or hold a lipstick urchin:a destination wedding photographer shoots the big island of hawaiiI won’t say goodbye, because The Big Island and I definitely have another date sometime in the future. 🙂 Stay tuned for pictures from the fabulous Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort wedding!a destination wedding photographer shoots the big island of hawaii

Engagement: Caitlin & Bryan – Lake Mitchell – Clanton, Alabama

The last time I saw Caitlin, we were standing in the parking lot after her sister’s wedding reception, talking about life, love, and all those other things that don’t make sense. 😉 Less than a year later, she was engaged and planning her own wedding, including an engagement session at Lake Mitchell.an engagement session at lake mitchell in clanton alabamaan engagement session at lake mitchell in clanton alabamaan engagement session at lake mitchell in clanton alabamaan engagement session at lake mitchell in clanton alabamaan engagement session at lake mitchell in clanton alabamaToward to end of their session, I suggested they do a few shots using the pool, just for giggles. So this Nashville based couple rolled up their jeans and splashed around a bit. Little did Caitlin know, Bryan had something a little more extreme in mind:an engagement session at lake mitchell in clanton alabama

Paris: Part 4 – The Wrap-Up

It’s hard to believe it’s been close to a year since I booked my flight to Paris. At the end of my trip, I left the city with mixed feelings. Part of me was sad to leave all those crepes behind. 🙂 Another part of me felt accomplished, because I had done what I had set out to do: decompress and hit that “reset” button in my head. I was excited to get home to see what was waiting for me. And even though the last year has had a few more dramatic ups and downs than I would like, I can’t help but be grateful for this trip; because without it, I don’t know that I would have be able to enjoy the ride at all. 🙂an american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisan american wedding photographer travels to parisSo Paris, until we meet again:an american wedding photographer travels to paris
