Portrait: Colby – The Waters – Pike Road, Alabama

If we’re friends on Facebook, then you might already know that this session didn’t start off as calm and peaceful as it looks.  It seemed like it would be a great day – mom and dad were joining in, along with dog Tutter (and what’s better than a boy and his dog?).  I shot Colby’s newborn session and many sessions with his family before that, so I was thinking “No sweat!” when I arrived for this session. Well, when I came in, I held eye contact with him a little too long, and he started WAILING (like with big fat tears the size of Volkswagens wailing). It took a little time but he slowly warmed up, and finally decided that the Creeper Lady with a Camera was sort of, a little bit, not so weird. Wedding: Debra & Todd – Fitzpatrick United Methodist Church & Private Residence – Fitzpatrick, Alabama

For me, a Saturday off from shooting a wedding isn’t really an “off” day.  It’s just a day to work on other things, like blogging pictures I’ve held off on posting so they could be posted on wedding blogs first!  Since Debra & Todd’s wedding festivities have been published on Rustic Wedding Chic, now I can share more details here.  The day started at their rustic vacation home, down a long winding gravel road on their farm in Fitzpatrick.  When I arrived, Debra and her daughter Lauren were getting hair and makeup done on the back porch (courtesy of Ty Eiland from Doug’s 2 Salon and Brianna G Makeup Artistry), while their friend played the banjo.  There were friends and family perched on the twin size porch swing chatting, more friends stuffing bean bags for cornhole, and labrador retrievers wandering about, happy to accept a pat on the head.  Seriously, it was like a scene out of a movie.  I half expected Matthew McConaughey to come around the corner and launch into a romantic monologue.initials on hay bales at rustic alabama weddinglabrador at fitzpatrick alabama weddingrustic letterpress wedding invitation and burlap bouquethuge emerald cut engagement ring in pheasant feathersbanjo player at rustic alabama weddingauburn cornhole bags and dog with wedding dress in alabama

We didn’t get Matthew McConaughey, but we did get a very dapper Todd in shades of blue and spectator wingtips.  When I first met him, he immediately reminded me of an actor I had seen, but I couldn’t put my finger on which one.  Then it hit me.  Debra thinks he looks like Bradley Cooper, which I can totally see – but if you mixed Bradley Cooper with Steven Weber (from the 90’s tv show Wings), you would TOTALLY get Todd.  Trust me, Google it!groom in gingham shirt and navy jacketgroom wearing spectator wingtipsgroom in navy gingham for rustic weddingbride in doorway of white rustic buildingbride in lace dress for rustic alabama weddingbride and groom first look at barn wedding

While the bride and groom were getting ready, Mary Sanders (from Mary Me, wedding planner extraordinaire) was buzzing about, expertly handling any questions that came up, as well as setting up the reception, which was going to be held at the barn on Debra & Todd’s farm.  They opted for a rustic vintage look, incorporating lace, wood, mason jars, and artfully mismatched china patterns.  The cakes (from Cake Designs) fit perfectly with the theme.

The wedding was conveniently held just down the road from the farm, at Fitzpatrick United Methodist Church.  The sweet ceremony was standing room only, and at one point, the entire bridal party (and the guests) joined in song.

While we took a few pictures, guests enjoyed cocktail hour just outside the barn, complete with rustic furniture, a bourbon tasting station, freshly shucked oysters, a hay bale seating area, and more.  Chalkboard signs lettered by Poppy Pedals guided the way.

When the sun went down, the barn doors were opened to reveal twinkling lights.  Guests were treated to Southern specialties from A Catered Affair, including hushpuppies and tiny cast iron pans full of turnip greens (must haves with fried catfish and venison quesadillas).

Once everyone hit the dance floor, many calories were burned.  Debra and Todd made sure those calories would be replenished though, with a s’mores station outside the barn at the fire pit, and a table full of Southern style pies and ice cream to go along with the wedding cakes.  Hungry for something salty after a few drinks?  They thought of that too, with late night snacks: jalapeno poppers and french fries!  They even made sure guests wouldn’t go hungry at home by giving favors of local Alabama honey, in corked glass bottles displayed in an antique armoire.

Debra and Todd: I’d be hard pressed to think of another wedding where all the guests (blood related and not) were so clearly treated like family.  Thank you so much for letting me be part of it for the day!

Snapshots: Wedding Albums

It’s been a while since I’ve done a wedding album post, so here you go!  It’s always interesting to me to see which images my couples choose for their albums when they have hundreds of proofs to go through.  But usually, I can guess about 75% of their picks.  The cover choices on the other hand, are often a BIG surprise for me.  Sometimes I think a particular couple will choose something relatively traditional, and instead, they go gaga over the textured leathers.  Guess you never know who has a hidden wild side!  😉hampstead wedding albummontgomery alabama weddingscolumbus ga wedding albumleather wedding albumsbirmingham wedding album

Wedding: Abigail & Miguel – First United Methodist Church & Montgomery Country Club – Montgomery, Alabama

I figured the duo affectionately known as “Abi-guel” would have a wedding just like them: classic, but with a little something unique here and there.  An unusual emerald engagement ring mixed with a traditional bridal updo, if you will.  Guests flew in from as far away as Miguel’s home country of Portugal, to see Abigail walk down the aisle of First United Methodist Church in an Anna Maier gown:

Melissa Kendall Floral Design added touches of blue and purple through the flowers, which were the perfect complement to the purple ties the guys wore with their dapper morning coats.  Clearly Abigail approved, as the first sight of her groom was enough to bring a tear to her eye.

I love how Abigail and her dad opted to skip the typical “bride walks down the aisle with her hand looped through her dad’s bent arm” stance, and went with the very royal hand-over-hand grip – a little throwback to the days when they attended balls in Montgomery.

Once the ceremony was over and Miguel switched his ring to his left hand (Abigail accidentally put it on his right!), the trolley arrived to transport folks to the Montgomery Country Club reception.  The bride and groom however, had a much more fabulous ride: a red Rolls Royce Corniche, made extra fly with Abigail’s veil trailing out (seriously, the lace on it had me swooning).

Since Abigail and Miguel met at Georgetown University, there were many Hoyas present.  Naturally, a Georgetown chant was inevitable:

A big fan of JoZettie’s Cupcakes, Abigail decided to forego a big bride’s cake and instead chose a small two-tier from Cake Designs to go along with several flavors of cupcakes.  The groom’s cake featured a shoutout to Sporting Club de Portugal.

Engagement: Bethany & JD – Montgomery, Alabama

Poor, poor JD.  Little did he know that Bethany’s family and I go back a good decade or so, so now he’s stuck with me too.  🙂  It all started when I met one of her aunts, then her mom, then her other aunt, and so on.  Somehow over the years, most of us have even ended up living in the same neighborhood (literally within blocks of each other – which is either really awesome or really weird, depending on who you ask) .  So needless to say, I had the inside info on when the question was going to be popped.  Once the ring was on, it was time to brave the mosquitoes and take some pics – a piece of cake because these two might be my most easy-going couple EVER.black and white montgomery engagementmontgomery engagement sessionalabama engagement sessioncouple laughing in montgomery alurban engagement session in alabamaauburn alabama house dividedfootball theme engagement picturesauburn university alabama engagement pictures
